Greater Sudbury: A Mining Hub With More

Jun 15, 2022

Many people know Greater Sudbury as a relatively small Northern Ontario mining community – but it is also a community that should be on everyone’s radar.

Nearly 80 Greater Sudbury-based companies are currently showcasing themselves as global leaders at the annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference, North America’s largest mining industry event, taking place in Toronto from June 13 to 15.

With one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, Greater Sudbury continues to grow and diversify as a community. As economic growth, diversity and prosperity remain local priorities, the City is focused on key actions to support the community's ongoing COVID-19 recovery efforts.

“Through the pandemic, our community continued to demonstrate great economic resilience. Mining was able to continue operations, as an essential industry, which in turn allowed the 300 companies that make up the local mining supply chain to remain in operation,” said the Mayor of Greater Sudbury. “Our message to potential investors remains clear: we are the epicentre for mining, and we are prepared for innovation and collaboration.”

Thanks to the combined strengths of the nickel industry, and the variety of employment opportunities created by economic diversification, Greater Sudbury has a stable and growing economy.

“Greater Sudbury has critical minerals, a strong industrial base and a highly skilled workforce. It’s a winning combination – a mining hub with more”, said Meredith Armstrong,  Director of Economic Development at the City of Greater Sudbury. “This is an award-winning research and training community that is not only a leader in environmental, health and mining research, but also supports local business development, entrepreneurship and growth.”

Northern Ontario is the global battery metals hub and, as the shift to electric vehicles grows, nickel and other critical minerals are in high demand. Last month, the City and its partners hosted the BEV In Depth: Mines to Mobility conference, a groundbreaking event that connected stakeholders engaged in advancing the promise of a fully integrated battery electric supply chain in Ontario and throughout Canada.

International delegations regularly come to Greater Sudbury to learn about our modern robust mining ecosystem, visit local mining companies, meet with company executives, and find out more about our award-winning environmental reclamation programs and stewardship. This year, the City of Greater Sudbury is hosting delegations from Peru, France, Sweden and MineAfrica.
