Catherine Matheson, the City’s General Manager of Community Development, is resigning from the City to take a position with the Region of Peel as Commissioner of Corporate Services. She will begin in her new role on December 3, 2018.

As General Manager of Community Development, she was responsible for the development of a Seniors’ Campus at the site of Pioneer Manor, which included the City of Lakes Family Health Team, the Northeastern Ontario Specialized Geriatric Services, and the recruitment of northeastern Ontario’s first specialized geriatrician. In addition, Catherine was responsible for leading the Healthy Community Strategy and Population Health Call to Action, achieving United Nations University recognition for the City of Greater Sudbury as a Regional Centre of Expertise.

Catherine is the appointed National, North and Central American lead with UNESCO for a global research initiative to re-orient education and training systems to improve the lives for indigenous youth by engaging education for sustainable development.  She is past President of the Ontario Municipal Social Services Association which represents 47 CMSMs and DSSABs across the province. As Council’s delegated sponsor and the executive lead for the new arena/event centre, she has also been the executive lead in the development of the new entertainment district on the Kingsway.

“It is no surprise that Catherine’s accomplishments at the City of Greater Sudbury would be attractive and useful to the Region of Peel,” said City of Greater Sudbury Chief Administrative Officer Ed Archer. “I am sure they will benefit from her expertise, intelligence and strong leadership. She is joining an excellent organization and leaves a strong legacy here. I’m thankful for the opportunity we’ve had to work together and wish her every success.”

As Commissioner of Corporate Services, Catherine will be a member of the Region’s Executive Leadership Team, responsible for a portfolio that includes Clerks, Human Resources, Corporate Strategy, Climate Change and Energy Management, Culture and Inclusion, Legal, Internal Audit, Real Property Asset Management, and Marketing and Communications.

“I am very excited to be joining the Region of Peel leading their corporate services team,” said Catherine. “I look forward to supporting the Executive Leadership Team to manage the Region as a future oriented and accountable government. I am proud of the work Greater Sudbury City Council, the City of Greater Sudbury, and our staff have undertaken for the community of Greater Sudbury.”

Catherine has been with the City of Greater Sudbury since 2002 and prior with the Regional Municipality of Sudbury. As General Manager of Community Development, she was responsible for a broad portfolio comprised of Transit, Housing Services, Social Services, Long-Term Care Services, Leisure Services, and Children and Citizen Services. The department has approximately 1,500 employees and an operating budget of $215 million. An interim replacement for her position and a process to select her permanent replacement will be announced soon.
