Walk Sudbury: Healthy Active Living is Just Steps Away!

Sep 13, 2016

Walking to some of your favourite neighborhood hotspots has never been easier with the introduction of Walk Sudbury! Walk Sudbury is a new community project that encourages Sudbury residents to walk to popular destinations with simple wayfinding signs that highlight key walking routes throughout the city.

Watch for wayfinding signs around town, or find routes at walksudbury.ca.  Get walking and enjoy!  You are invited to share your comments, pictures and experiences with the hashtag #walksudbury.

The Coalition for a Livable Sudbury launched Walk Sudbury in partnership with The City of Greater Sudbury, The Healthy Kids Community Challenge and Downtown Sudbury. Community volunteers working with the Coalition for a Livable Sudbury helped to establish the walking routes, designed and put up wayfinding signs along the routes that will lead to destinations like parks, trails, and schools.

“We are very excited to move forward with Walk Sudbury.  We hope it inspires people to walk more as part of their daily life and discover new walking routes and destinations,” said Naomi Grant, Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury Co-Chair. “Twenty-five volunteers have helped us carry out this project and we are very thankful for their contributions.”

All 198 of the Walk Sudbury signs can be found along 16 walkable routes and they will list the walking distances in minutes and the number of steps it will take to get to a particular destination. One of Walk Sudbury’s aims is to remind residents that walking is a viable transportation option.

“Walking is a simple way to stay active and often times people don’t realize how little time it may take to walk to a park or a library in their neighborhood,” said Kate Barber, Project Manager of the Healthy Kids Community Challenge. “We are happy to support a project that will get families outdoors and hopefully exploring new places to socialize and have fun.”

Visit walksudbury.ca for maps and information about the walking routes. Important information for walkers like the presence of stairs and busy crossings is included in the maps. You are also invited to share your own routes and comments on an interactive map on the site.

The 16 walking routes connect neighbourhoods to downtown, connect families to neighbourhood destinations like parks, trails, schools and libraries, and connect people to the Junction Creek trail.
