New Waste Management By-law Time Restrictions will not be Enforced

The Finance and Administration Committee approved a resolution to suspend enforcement of a recently amended section of the Waste Management by-law which specifies times for curbside waste placement beginning April 1.

Section 8(1)(b) of the by-law, which states that residents must place their waste at the curb no earlier than 5 a.m. and no later than 7 a.m. between April 1 and November 30 will not be enforced while staff work on alternate recommendations to present to City Council.

The amendment to the Waste Management by-law last fall was in response to a higher than usual number of bear encounters in 2015. Residents are encouraged to refrain from placing their waste at the curb the evening before collection, if possible, in order to reduce bear encounters.
