Junction Creek Reconstruction and Reprofiling

The City of Greater Sudbury will continue improvements on Junction Creek from Lloyd Street to Wilma Street, Sudbury.

This project is part of the Council-approved Capital Project for ENG24-42 Junction Creek Reconstruction and Reprofiling. This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund and will make Junction Creek more resilient to the effects of climate change.

Construction by the City’s contractor, Denis Gratton Construction is ongoing and is expected to be phased over three construction seasons with completion expected November 2027.

Project Manager:
Kevin Reynish

Project Highlights:

  • For the 2025 construction season, work is planned from Lloyd Street to the Leslie Street bridge and may be adjusted depending on the progress of the work
  • An increase in construction traffic is expected along designated haul routes on Louis, Mountain, Leslie, King and Bond Streets
  • The creek bed will be excavated to improve the operation of storm sewers, minimize potential risks of flooding and enhance stormwater management
  • Fish habitat will be improved with the introduction of new rocky bottom to the creek
  • The creek banks will be regraded to improve slope stability and reduce impacts of erosion, protecting adjacent properties
  • Invasive plant species will be removed where possible and replaced with native species.  Existing municipal infrastructure for water, sanitary and stormwater services will be relocated to reduce any negative impacts to the creek and improve access for future maintenance; and
  • The Junction Creek Waterway Park Trail will be temporarily closed to pedestrians in the area where the 2025 construction season work is planned.

Construction Update:

  • Starting the week of August 11, 2025, the Louis Street Tot Lot on St. Joseph Street will be temporarily closed. This closure is necessary to complete construction work between the Louis Street culvert and the Leslie Street Bridge. The park is expected to reopen at the end of September 2025.
  • During the closure, families are encouraged to explore other nearby municipal playgrounds. For a full list of locations, visit greatersudbury.ca/parksandplaygrounds
  • Residents may notice increased truck traffic on St. Joseph Street. These trucks will be transporting materials to and from the site throughout the rest of the project.
