Taking steps to make the community cardiac safe: Paramedic Services Launches Defibrillator Loaner Program

Jun 30, 2023

Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time, and it is important to be prepared. Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services now has five public access Automated External Defibrillator (AED) units that can be requested on a first-come first-served basis for events within the City of Greater Sudbury boundaries.

An AED is a device that gives an electrical shock to the heart of someone who is in cardiac arrest. It’s used to reset the heart to a normal beat. Studies show that the immediate use of an AED, combined with performing CPR and calling 9-1-1, can drastically increase someone’s chance of survival from a cardiac event. However, all too often, AEDS are not publicly accessible.

The AED Loaner Program was established to improve public access, awareness and proper education of defibrillators, and empower residents with the necessary skills and equipment to act quickly in the event of an emergency.
