Smart Commute - The Greener Way to Travel!

Jun 27, 2023

As part of this year’s Bike Month celebrations, the City of Greater Sudbury is launching its new rideshare program, Smart Commute.

Smart Commute is a mobile and web application that changes the way we think about transportation. In line with the City’s commitment to climate change action and innovative active travel, the program provides tools and resources that support and incentivize cycling, walking, carpooling and transit travel as easy and convenient ways to get around.

“Transportation is one of the largest sources of carbon emissions in North America. Shifting how we commute will go a long way to reduce our city’s carbon footprint, reduce traffic on the roads and encourage a healthy lifestyle,” says Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre. “As part of Council’s commitment to a Net-Zero Greater Sudbury, we are excited to be the first municipality in the North to offer the program as a way to advance our combined efforts against climate change as a community.”

The application is free to use and is open to all different kinds of commuters. Whether you are a driver looking to share commuting costs, or don’t own a car and are looking for a ride, Smart Commute will match you with other members based on the routes and preferences you set up. Love cycling, but prefer the safety of another rider? Smart Commute can match you up with another cyclist in your area.

Taking into consideration all forms of active travel, such as walking, cycling, public transit, telework, and carpooling, the app offers special incentive programs to reward members for choosing a greener alternative to single passenger driving trips.
