The Market opens in Downtown Sudbury this Saturday, June 28

The Market will celebrate the start of its second season at 233 Elgin Street, next to the CP/VIA Rail station, this Saturday, June 28. Everyone is invited to join Market staff and vendors at 10 a.m. for refreshments, balloons and live entertainment. The Market will open rain or shine every Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until October 26.

“We look forward to a bigger and better second season at The Market,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Marianne Matichuk. “Reaction to the new location for The Market has been very positive. This year, we’ve added some additional site improvements, some new vendors and more entertainment. We’re building on a proven success and I hope everyone takes the opportunity to visit the Market this summer.”

To date, 22 vendors have registered for the start of The Market season. Shoppers can expect fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers, smoked meats and baked goods, as well as handcrafted and unique products. Local performers and community groups will add to the festive atmosphere of The Market with entertainment and activities each weekend. Colorful canopies cover most of the site to provide weather protection.

The first Saturday of the season on June 28 will feature the Myths and Mirrors Kazzzam Stiltwalking troupe, Chicks with Picks on stage at 9 a.m. and YES Theatre at 11 a.m. Community groups include the Greater Sudbury Food Policy Council, Fruit for All, the Northern Ontario Art Association, the Art Gallery of Sudbury and a renewal of the We Live Up Here photo mural.

Sunday’s live entertainment features 2014 Meltdown winners Patrick Wright et les Gauchistes on stage at 10:30 a.m.

Future phases of The Market will be redesigned as part of the Elgin Greenway, a green pedestrian and active transportation corridor that will connect the Laurentian University School of Architecture, The Market, and the rest of downtown with Bell Park and the Junction Creek Waterway Park.
