Assistant Instructor

Through classroom learning and in-water practice, the Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor course prepares candidates to help instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. During the 18 hour course, candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching while they master basic progressions. The roles and responsibilities of instructors and their assistants are emphasized. 100 per cent attendance is mandatory as it is a continuous evaluation.

Course Length:

18 hours

Prerequisite: 14 years of age by the end of the course; Bronze Cross or higher certification (need not be current)

Course Manuals: Canadian Lifesaving Manual

By the end of the Lifesaving Society Swim and Lifesaving Instructors course, participants must have completed a minimum of 12 volunteer hours assisting a swim instructor.  Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age. While it is recommended these hours be completed after finishing the Assistant Instructor course, they can also be started after obtaining the Bronze Cross award. Volunteer swim instructors are required to commit to the entire session from start to finish to gain the most benefit. Consistent involvement is crucial – sporadic participation will not be permitted. This ensures volunteers can build stronger relationships with their students, maintain continuity in their teaching and fully experience the whole process.

The French interface of our new registration system is still under development, however it is important that the City goes live with the new system as the existing registration and facility booking system is no longer supported by the vendor. Residents can still receive this service in French by calling 311 to have a French-speaking operator process bookings or registrations. The French interface will be launched in time for the fall/winter registration period.
