GOVA Transit Farebox Upgrade Project

GOVA Transit Farebox Upgrade Project

GOVA Transit will launch the GOVA Pass mobile app in March as part of ongoing efforts to modernize fare payment and enhance the rider experience.

The GOVA Pass app lets riders securely purchase and store bus passes on their smartphone, with added features of real-time bus schedules and arrivals—all in one place.

To support a smooth transition, the sale and use of paper ride cards will be gradually phased out. During the transition period, paper ride cards will continue to be accepted on GOVA and third-party vendors may continue selling any remaining ride cards they have in stock. Fare purchases and in-person support will also remain available at the Downtown Transit Hub, Greater Sudbury Public Library locations, and Citizen Service Centres should a preferred vendor run out of passes.

This spring, following the mobile app launch, GOVA Transit will introduce the reloadable GOVA Pass smart card. Riders will be able to load fares onto their card online or at various City facilities, providing an additional convenient option for those who prefer a physical card.

Both new payment systems are designed to simplify fare purchases, improve the rider experience, reduce boarding times, and offer greater flexibility for customers. Once fully implemented, riders will be able to pay for transit anywhere, anytime.

The Farebox Upgrade Project supports the City’s Community and Energy Emissions Plan target of increasing transit use to 25 per cent by 2050 and aligns with the City’s Strategic Plan by enhancing service excellence through innovative system improvements. This initiative forms part of the Transit Farebox Upgrade Project approved by City Council.
