Highway Traffic Act

Yielding to Transit Buses

Yielding to buses helps keep transit moving efficiently and safely. It reduces delays for passengers and improves traffic flow for everyone.  Under Section 142.1 of Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, drivers must yield the right of way to a bus that is leaving a designated bus stop (bus bay) and re-entering traffic.

Key Points to Remember:
  • All GOVA transit buses are equipped with a Yield sign on the rear.
  • When a bus signals (using its indicator) to leave a bus stop and merge back into traffic, you are required to yield and allow it to re-enter the lane.
  • The law applies only when the bus is leaving a bus bay or designated stop—not at intersections or other locations.
  • Failing to yield can result in fines and penalties under the Highway Traffic Act.

Please do your part—watch for the signal and Yield to Buses
