Minor Variance Approval Process

1. Once you submit your application, it is sent to relevant City departments and agencies for review and comment.

2. The legal notice of your application will appear in the newspaper with a deadline for comments on the application. A courtesy notice will also be mailed to property owners within a 60 metre (approximate 200 foot) radius of your property. Applicants are encouraged to discuss their plans with their neighbours as it may clarify matters and avoid misunderstandings or issues at the Committee.

3. It is up to the applicant to make their case, in person, before the Committee of Adjustment. You may send a representative or agent as well to act for you.

4. Following the hearing you will receive a Notice of Decision that specifies whether the application was approved or not, and if any conditions were included in the decision.

5. If you are unsatisfied with the decision you may appeal the decision to the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT). Learn more about public hearings and the appeal process. Decisions may only be appealed by the applicant, the Minister, or a specified person or public body.
