Tax Rate

Along with the assessed value of your property, we also use your tax rate to calculate your property tax. The tax rate is set by City Council.

Factors affecting your tax rate

There are a few factors that affect your tax rate. These include:

  • The property tax class that your property falls into. For example, your property may be classified as residential, commercial, industrial, farm or other.
  • The level of fire service you receive. For example, there are career, composite or volunteer fire services levels. Learn more about the different levels of fire service.
  • The level of public transportation service you receive. This may be urban or commuter.

All these factors are added to the provincial education tax rate, which gives you your total tax rate.

This tax rate (shown as a percentage) is multiplied by your property assessment to give you your property tax total.
