Pioneer Manor Launches Program to Address Social Isolation and Loneliness

May 21, 2021

Residents at Pioneer Manor can now take part in a program designed to increase socialization and reduce loneliness, depression and social isolation.

Funded in part by the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP), Pioneer Manor received funding of just over $21,000 to implement Java Group Programs in the Home for a year.

“We know that loneliness, depression and social isolation are common among older adults, especially during the pandemic,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger. “These programs will provide people with an important emotional outlet and support during this challenging time. It will enhance social interaction in a safe environment and promote a sense of purpose.”

The Java Music Club program focuses on peer support and building strong emotional connections between residents. It’s based on the concept that people are happiest when they are helping one another. The program includes a combination of themes, photography, music and readings.

The Java Music Club program is facilitated by residents, with support from staff and volunteers. The program has been adapted to ensure COVID-19 safety protocols, including physical distancing and face-covering/mask measures, are in place.

Once the Java Music Club program is established, the Java Memory Care program will be implemented. This is an adaptation of the Java Music Club program and is designed to improve quality of life for those living with advanced dementia.
