Council Approves Community Arts and Culture Grants for 2014

Jul 8, 2014

Greater Sudbury Council has approved the disbursement of $57,819 to support 23 not-for-profit community arts and cultural organizations in 2014, as recommended by the Community Arts and Culture Grant Advisory Panel. Arts and culture grant programs were established to stimulate growth and development of this important economic sector and increase its potential to attract and retain a talented and creative workforce.

“A vibrant arts and culture community is the foundation for quality of life and economic development,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Marianne Matichuk. “City Council remains committed to sustaining and growing local organizations which inspire creativity in our great city."

Volunteers serving on the Community Arts and Culture Grant Advisory Panel evaluate project grant applications for special or one-time activities or exhibits, skills development or acquisition of new equipment. Submissions are reviewed for artistic and cultural merit, community impact, organizational and financial health.

At the request of the Advisory Panel, unallocated funds from the 2014 grant intake totaling $29,858 will be carried over to increase available funding for project grants in 2015 to $117,535. Project grant applications in future years will be evaluated against the goals of a new Cultural Plan to incorporate the themes of innovation, creativity and potential for increased capacity.

A steering committee of interested citizens and representatives of the Greater Sudbury arts and culture community is leading the planning process of this new Cultural Plan with the objective of creating a community that is committed and supportive of arts and culture, proud of its character and heritage, that values the economic potential and contribution of the arts, nurtures innovation and creative expression, and promotes strong collaborations and communication.

Citizens will have further opportunities for input into the new Cultural Plan as work progresses.
