City of Greater Sudbury Receives National Award for Financial Reporting

The City of Greater Sudbury is being recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). The Canadian Award for Financial Reporting has been awarded to the City of Greater Sudbury Finance Department for the 2012 Annual Financial Report.

“We continue to make progress making the City of Greater Sudbury accessible and accountable, and I am pleased to see staff rewarded for their efforts. It’s wonderful to be recognized by peers in this way, and staff should be very proud of the work they do,” Mayor Marianne Matichuk said.

“I’m very proud of our Financial Services team for their continued commitment to the financial integrity of our Corporation,” said Doug Nadorozny, Chief Administrative Officer. “This award recognizes the hard work and dedication of all the staff involved and we are honoured to have received the recognition.”

While financial statements for previous years have been available on the City’s website, the 2012 Annual Financial Report was the first comprehensive report of its kind for the City.

“The Annual Financial Report was created to further establish transparency and full disclosure for the City’s financial reporting.” said Lorella Hayes, Chief Financial Officer/City Treasurer. “We are proud to have received this honour from a group of our peers from across North America.”

The Canadian Award for Financial Reporting program was established to encourage municipal governments to publish high quality financial reports and to provide peer recognition and technical guidance for officials preparing these reports. Reports are judged by a national review committee to meet the high standards of the program.

The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving nearly 18,000 government finance professionals in the United States and Canada.
