Great Horned Owl
Great Horned Owl / Grand-duc / Ohoomisii
FUN FACTS
- This owl stays year-round in Greater Sudbury. Pairs begin courting and choosing territories from February through March.
- Their prey is diverse and includes amphibians, reptiles, geese, rodents like porcupines, snowshoe hares and even carnivores like raccoons. Small prey is eaten whole; bones and fur are regurgitated later.
- Owls have evolved “stealth-like” flight to capture prey undetected.
HOW REGREENING HELPS THIS SPECIES
- Regreening improves habitat for the owl’s prey.
- Older trees from early regreening efforts are now large enough to allow owls to nest and roost.
