Red Maple
Red Maple / Érable rouge / Zhiishiigimewanzh
FUN FACTS
- Red maple is the preferred browse for moose, deer, hare and beaver. Ruffed grouse, red squirrels and chipmunks eat its seeds.
- Can be tapped to make maple syrup but the boiled sap is less sweet than that of sugar maple.
- Early flowering provides one of the first sources of nectar for bees and other pollinators in the north.
HOW REGREENING HELPS THIS SPECIES
- Regreening encourages healthy growth into singlestemmed trees rather than stunted, shrub-like forms.
- Survivors are now able to reseed themselves as increased moisture retention and organic content of the surface soil has allowed seeds to germinate.
