Chalk-fronted corporal
Chalk-fronted corporal / Julienne / Obodashkwanishi
FUN FACTS
- Dragonflies are some of the most ancient living creatures. They are the world’s fastest insect reaching speeds up to 60km/h.
- Chalk-fronted corporal refers to pale white bars (corporal stripes) on top of the first segment of an adult male’s thorax. Females lack these stripes.
- Dragonflies don’t bite or sting humans. Adult dragonflies prey mainly on mosquitoes, flies, bees and other small invertebrates. A squadron of dragonflies is always a welcome sight for bush workers in June when the black flies are at their peak!
HOW REGREENING HELPS THIS SPECIES
- Spending most of their lives (one to four years) underwater as nymphs, dragonflies benefit from lake and stream improvements due to the regreening of surrounding watersheds. Planting of trees and shrubs near water courses also provides a diverse habitat for adult dragonflies and their prey.
