Why your pet needs a licence

An up-to-date dog or cat licence gives pet owners the following benefits:

  • Less worry when a pet is lost. People are more likely to approach a stray dog or cat if it is wearing a tag and Animal Shelter staff can contact the owner immediately
  • The first time your dog or cat strays and is picked up by By-law Compliance and Enforcement it will not be brought to the Animal Shelter if we can arrange to meet you at home. (No fee).
  • Knowing what has happened to your pet. Greater Sudbury Animal Shelter will contact owners of deceased pets collected from municipal roads if the pet can be identified

Dog and cat licence fees support:

  • Shelter and care for lost and homeless dogs and cats in the City of Greater Sudbury
  • Adoption and fostering of homeless dogs and cats brought to Greater Sudbury Animal Shelter
  • Medical care for injured and sick dogs and cats at Greater Sudbury Animal Shelter
  • 24/7 emergency rescue of sick or injured stray dogs and cats by the City of Greater Sudbury
  • Investigation of complaints about neglected, barking or stray dogs and cats by the City of Greater Sudbury
