Beautification

Downtown Sudbury features a vibrant entertainment and restaurant scene and hosts numerous events throughout the year. However, increased homelessness and the presence of encampments have created challenges in maintaining the cleanliness of key public spaces, including Memorial Park and downtown sidewalks and planters.

The Downtown Action Plan commits to:

  • Upholding Memorial park’s cleanliness, safety and landscaping, including ongoing turf care, sod installation, tree pruning, lock-stone repairs and preparation of the Cenotaph area.
  • Reviewing staff assignments and service levels to ensure sidewalk and right-of-way weed removal, street sweeping and waste removal processes are effective and meeting City standards,
  • Taking a proactive approach to Property Standards enforcement from City Bylaw Officers to ensure properties downtown are being maintained, supported by enhanced cleanup efforts and other beautification initiatives led by City staff.
  • Working with the BIA and other community partners to address graffiti removal on private property, while ensuring processes are followed for city property.

Progress reported on June 23, 2026:

  • On May 1, 2026, the City and the Downtown Sudbury BIA placed a TyeDee litter container at 115 Larch St.
  • A Spring Litter Abatement Blitz took place in April to clear downtown streets of refuse.
  • Memorial Park revitalization efforts have made great strides, with new landscaping, an improved performance stage and the development of new vendors. The park has reopened to the public as of June 23, 2026.
