Planning for a Prosperous Downtown

City staff continue to work on an updated Downtown Master Plan, which will identify new areas for continued growth and development. While the Downtown Action Plan identifies a number of urgent, short to medium term actions, it is important to ensure we are enabling new businesses and residential opportunities to prosper downtown in the long term.
The Downtown Action Plan commits to:
- Providing adequate and appropriate parking options in Downtown as the Transformation Project advances. Short-term, temporary parking plans are in place, while the Downtown Master Plan outlines a longer-term strategy. Information on parking downtown is available here: https://www.greatersudbury.ca/live/transportation-parking-and-roads/parking/downtown-municipal-parking/
- Building on the work being done now to create a vibrant downtown and leverage the City’s investments in new facilities and strategic land parcels.
Progress reported on June 23, 2026:
- Infrastructure improvements work towards advancing one of the Downtown Master Plan’s four directives, Access and Connectivity, for a more vibrant downtown.
- Staff are developing an Expression of Interest (EOI) process to attract investments to downtown Sudbury. Investments could include the construction of a hotel, conference centre or integrated parking solution.
- Staff continue to advance other strategic opportunities, such as the development potential of the CP rail station.
