Special Items

Residential and non-residential roadside waste collection services will be rescheduled. Please do not place garbage, green carts or blue boxes at the roadside, as this may impact road clearing efforts. Alternate pickup dates will be communicated once available. We will provide an update once bulky item collection service has been restored.

Due to the winter storm event, furniture, appliance and electronic collection services are also temporarily suspended. Please do not place these items at the roadside, in laneways or on top of snowbanks, as they may impact snow clearing operations.

New Green Cart requests have also been suspended.

All landfill sites and the Recycling Centre are closed.

Procedure for Disposal of Cannabis

Small quantities of non-hazardous solid cannabis generated from households on the City's roadside waste collection system:

  • The non-hazardous solid cannabis must be made unusable and unrecognizable by grinding the cannabis solid waste and mixing it with food waste. The combination waste can then be placed in a certified compostable bag in the Green Cart for roadside collection.

Or

  • The non-hazardous solid cannabis must be made unusable and unrecognizable by grinding the cannabis solid waste and mixing it with leaf & yard trimmings. The combination waste can then be placed in a brown compostable paper leaf & yard trimmings bag for roadside collection.

Small quantities of non-hazardous solid cannabis generated from households or other generators without roadside waste collection services:

  • The non-hazardous solid cannabis must be made unusable and unrecognizable by grinding the cannabis solid waste and mixing it with food waste. The combination waste can then be placed in a certified compostable bag and delivered to a City landfill site and placed in the designated organics bin.

Or

  • The non-hazardous solid cannabis must be made unusable and unrecognizable by grinding the cannabis solid waste and mixing it with leaf & yard trimmings. The combination waste can then be placed in a brown compostable paper leaf & yard trimmings bag and delivered to a City landfill site and placed in the designated leaf & yard trimmings area.

Large quantities of non-hazardous solid cannabis:

  • The non-hazardous solid cannabis must be made unusable and unrecognizable by grinding and double bagging in garbage bags. Large quantities will be treated similar to our asbestos disposal process. The generator must call City Services at 311 to request special disposal services with the City's Environmental Services Division.
