Greater Sudbury's Food System
Food Access Map | Greater Sudbury Food Strategy | Get Involved
A food system is made of a series of activities, networks and resources required to produce, harvest, process, consume and dispose of food. Food system activities and initiatives include agriculture, gardening, foraging, fishing, hunting, food processing, retail, food waste reduction and diversion from landfills.
Supporting local food system activities strengthens the local economy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and promotes a more vibrant, resilient and sustainable community.
The City of Greater Sudbury has developed the following resources in partnership with residents, community groups, organizations and businesses to help increase awareness of local food organizations, businesses and initiatives.

Greater Sudbury Food Strategy
A Greater Sudbury Food Strategy was developed in 2017 by the Greater Sudbury Food Policy Council in partnership with the City of Greater Sudbury’s EarthCare program and Public Health Sudbury & Districts to help guide the community towards an equitable, vibrant and sustainable food system that provides residents with accessible, affordable and nutritious food.

In 2025, a Greater Sudbury Food System Assessment was developed to revisit the goals of the Food Strategy, examining successes and challenges throughout the food system eight years later, and offering recommendations for meaningful change across seven core themes. The assessment was made possible through a GSDC grant that funded a two-year contract for a Food Systems Coordinator at the City of Greater Sudbury.
