Here is an overview of some key discussions and decisions from the City Council meeting on May 27.
Downtown Sudbury BIA
Executive Director Jeff MacIntyre and Co-Chair Kendra MacIsaac provided the annual update from the Downtown Sudbury Business Improvement Area (BIA), They introduced recently opened downtown businesses, provided an overview of 2024 activities and highlighted some 2025 initiatives, including the Welcoming Streets program, the patio program, the Sudbury Market at Elm Place, and events like Concerts in the Park, Harvest Festival, Up Here Festival, Downtown Yard Sale and the holiday market and Santa Claus parade.
Update of the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan
Council approved the 2025 update of the Community Safety and Well-Being (CSWB) Plan, a collaborative and action-oriented model for a safe, healthy and welcoming Greater Sudbury. The plan is intended to provide a model to guide the collective response to complex social challenges.
The CSWB model takes a collaborative approach to the promotion of population health, public safety, and community well-being. The updated framework was developed by a panel of representatives from the City of Greater Sudbury, Greater Sudbury Police Service, N’Swakamok Indigenous Friendship Centre, Health Sciences North, Public Health Sudbury and Districts and other community agencies.
Member’s Motion on Affordable Housing Land Bank
Council approved a motion from Councillor Fortin to reconsider a 2024 resolution that called for the vacant northerly portion of the Lionel E. Lalonde Centre site in Azilda to be rezoned to Medium Density Residential and added to the City’s affordable housing land bank.
Following discussion on the matter, Council approved a resolution for the site to only be included in the affordable housing land bank once the aquatic review plan for Azilda is confirmed, financed and construction has begun on an aquatic facility.
At its meeting on October 8, 2024, Council approved the Aquatic Service and Facility Review as the foundation for guiding future decisions relating to aquatic infrastructure, programs and operations in Greater Sudbury. At that same meeting, Council approved Councillor Fortin’s motion for staff to conduct a feasibility study on the development of a new aquatic centre at Lionel E. Lalonde Centre, including a 25-metre pool with separate warm water tank. Read the motion here.
