Residents in low-lying areas urged to prepare for possible flooding

Apr 16, 2026

With the recent declaration of a Flood Warning by Conservation Sudbury due to rain, snowmelt and rising water levels, the City of Greater Sudbury is urging residents, especially those in low-lying and flood-prone areas, to take steps now to protect their property and stay safe.

The City is monitoring local conditions and responding to flooding impacts that affect municipal roads, drainage systems and facilities. City crews and contractors have been actively clearing blocked culverts, storm grates and removing snow and debris from ditches to help address ponding issues.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring updates from Conservation Sudbury, which provides flood watches, warnings and advisory information for local watersheds and watercourses. Those in low-lying areas should also take the following steps in advance of potential flooding:

  • Check your sump pump to make sure it is working properly and that the sump pit is clear of debris.
  • Make sure downspouts are positioned to direct water away from your home’s foundation and away from neighbouring properties.
  • Clear snow, ice, leaves and debris from nearby storm sewer grates if it is safe to do so.
  • Move valuables and important items out of basements or other low areas that may be at risk.
  • Keep drains clear and make sure water can flow away from your property.
  • Have a plan for how you will respond if water begins to enter your home.
  • Make sure flashlights, batteries, bottled water and other emergency supplies are easy to access.
  • If your property has a history of flooding, consider getting sandbags in advance if conditions worsen.

If flooding occurs, residents should avoid entering flooded basements unless it is safe to do so. Contact your hydro or gas utility if disconnection is needed. If sewage is present, contact a licensed plumber as a first step.

If there is a storm sewer grate near your property, check it for debris. If it is safe to do so, clear debris using a broom or shovel. If you cannot remove it safely, contact the City for assistance.

If needed, the City may provide sand and sandbags to residents experiencing or at risk of flooding on their property. Information about locations and availability will be shared if supports are activated.
