PSA – UPDATE: Greater Sudbury Remains Under a Significant Weather Event
Mar 18, 2026
March 18, 2026 – 8:30 p.m.
The City of Greater Sudbury continues to work around the clock to clear roads. The current priority remains completing the first passes on residential roads to ensure every household has at least basic access. As a result, some streets currently have only a single lane cleared, allowing crews to reach as many households as possible as quickly as possible. Road widening is also underway to restore two-way access and support winter operations.
Due to deep, compacted snow and icy conditions, crews must rely on graders and loaders rather than traditional plows, which significantly extends timelines.
The City recognizes that significant snow accumulation has resulted in large windrows at the ends of driveways. Resources are being deployed to assist with clearing where possible; however, equipment is extremely limited and timelines cannot be guaranteed.
Sidewalk clearing will begin following road clearing and widening activities. Timelines for this work have not yet been determined.
Municipal Services
All municipal services will resume regular operating hours as of Thursday, March 19, 2026, with the exception of roadside waste collection, landfills and recycling centres, and GOVA Transit.
To support ongoing road clearing efforts, residential and non-residential roadside waste collection has been suspended until the end of the week. Alternate collection dates will be communicated shortly and will be available on the City’s Waste Wise app and at www.greatersudbury.ca/wastewise. Residents are asked not to place garbage, recycling or green cart materials at the roadside at this time.
Several GOVA routes have been restored, and work is ongoing to return full service. Some routes are currently operating with detours.
