Anticipated Extended Heat Warning

Environment Canada is expected to issue an extended heat warning tomorrow, Wednesday, July 1, 2026. In anticipation of the warning, the City is taking proactive steps to ensure residents know where they can go and what they can do to stay cool.

On Canada Day:

Residents are encouraged to take in celebrations happening indoors, including at the Sudbury Community Arena from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Sudbury Multcultural and Folk Arts Association’s free event features international cuisine, multicultural performances, vendors, a Kids Zone and more. 

The City has extended the hours of lifeguard supervision at all seven municipal beaches from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. (regular hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
Beach locations:
•    Bell Park Main Beach on Ramsey Lake in Sudbury. A floating wheelchair may be reserved (free) at this location by calling 705-674-9116.
•    Capreol Public Beach on Marshy Lake in Capreol
•    Centennial Park Beach on Vermillion River in Whitefish
•    Kalmo Beach on Whitson Lake in Val Caron
•    Moonlight Beach on Ramsey Lake in Sudbury
•    Nepahwin Beach on Nepahwin Lake in Sudbury
•    Whitewater Lake Park on Whitewater Lake in Azilda

The City’s 17 splash pads are open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Visit www.greatersudbury.ca/splashpads for locations.

Additionally, beginning Thursday, July 2, 2026, to the end of the extended heat warning:

Municipal pools will be open during regular hours. To check for public swim times, visit greatersudbury.ca/pools.

Libraries and citizen service centres will be available as cooling centres during regular hours of operation. For library hours and locations, visit www.sudburylibraries.ca/hours-locations.

The following community centres will be open as cooling centres during regular hours.
•    McClelland Community Centre and Arena (Copper Cliff)
•    Cambrian Arena (Sudbury)

All GOVA and GOVA Plus buses are equipped with air conditioning. A water fountain with a bottle refilling station is available at the GOVA Transit terminal downtown.

The Go Give Project operates a drop-in centre at Energy Court, open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. This offers a safe, air conditioned space where people experiencing homelessness can cool down and rest.

Residents with unique needs who require additional assistance should call 311 to discuss their situation.
