Landfill Maintenance May Cause Temporary Odours Due to Seasonal Temperatures and Shifting Winds
Sep 25, 2024
The City of Greater Sudbury is carrying out essential maintenance at the Sudbury Landfill to ensure environmental compliance and improve site conditions. This work involves applying compost to specific areas to stabilize the soil and reduce erosion, followed by hydroseeding to promote grass growth and support proper drainage. Hydroseeding is weather dependent, and must be completed before the onset of winter.
These actions are crucial for maintaining the integrity of the landfill and managing surface runoff effectively.
Due to higher-than-normal seasonal temperatures and shifting winds, residents may temporarily notice odours in the area during this work. These odours are the result of compost spreading, a routine part of landfill management. It is expected that the odours will subside as the work progresses.
The maintenance is expected to continue for the next two weeks. We appreciate your patience as we work to improve the landfill for the long-term benefit of both the community and the environment.
