City Council Meeting Wrap-Up: June 25, 2024
Jun 25, 2024
The City Council meeting on June 25 included an update from SNOLAB, a decision to rename two municipal assets in dedication to recently passed City Councillors, and members’ motions on the landfill gate fee and Beaver Lake emergency services station.
SNOLAB: Reaching New Heights Deep Underground
Dr. Jodi Cooley, Executive Director at SNOLAB, provided an update on SNOLAB’s strategy and success stories.
In recognition of the commitment and community dedication of the two City Councillors who passed away earlier this year, Council unanimously approved a renaming request from Mayor Lefebvre. The community hall in the T.M. Davies Community Centre and Arena will be renamed to the Michael Vagnini Community Hall, and the Whitson River Trail will be renamed to the Gerry Montpellier Trail.
Council defeated a member’s motion to reconsider a $5 gate fee for landfill and transfer station visits that was approved as part of the user fees in the 2024-2025 budget. The fee will be implemented on July 1. More information will be shared in the coming days.
Beaver Lake Emergency Services Station
In June 2023, Council approved nine resolutions to maintain, renovate or consolidate Greater Sudbury’s Fire and Paramedic stations. One resolution was for the Beaver Lake station to remain open for a period of one year while efforts were expanded to recruit enough volunteer firefighters to match the average number of volunteers in other stations. If not enough volunteers were recruited by the deadline, Council agreed the station would be closed and an automatic aid agreement would be negotiated with the Nairn Centre Fire Services.
At tonight’s meeting, Council defeated a member’s motion to extend that deadline to September 15, 2025.
Firefighter Recruitment, Retention and Certification
Staff presented a status update on volunteer firefighter recruitment and retention, and on the City’s progress in meeting provincially mandated certification requirements for all firefighters.
