Extended Heat Warning: July 5, 2023

An extended heat warning issued by Environment Canada has activated the municipal Hot Weather Response Plan. There are a number of options available to help residents beat the heat today.

Beaches

The City operates public beaches at the following locations:

  • Bell Park Main Beach – Ramsey Lake, Sudbury
  • Capreol Public Beach – Marshy Lake, Capreol
  • Centennial Park Beach – Vermilion River, Whitefish
  • Kalmo Beach – Whitson Lake, Val Caron
  • Moonlight Beach – Ramsey Lake, Sudbury
  • Nepahwin Beach – Nepahwin Lake, Sudbury
  • Whitewater Lake Park – Whitewater Lake, Azilda

Lifeguard supervision will be extended to 9 p.m. at Bell Park Main Beach and Moonlight Beach. Lifeguards will be on duty at the other five beaches until 7 p.m.

Libraries

Greater Sudbury Public Library branches are available as a cool place to visit during the extended heat wave.

The following branches will be open from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. this evening.

  • Main Library (Mackenzie)
  • Chelmsford Library and Citizen Service Centre
  • Lively Library and Citizen Service Centre
  • New Sudbury Library
  • South End Library
  • Valley East Library and Citizen Service Centre

Community Centres, Arenas and Pools

Recreational swims are available at the following times and locations today:

  • Howard Armstrong Recreation Centre: Public Swim 12 to 12:55 p.m.
  • R.G. Dow Pool: Adult Swim 12 to 12:55 p.m.
  • Nickel District Pool: Adult Swim 12 to 12:55 pm.

Arena hours are as follows today:

  • Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex – open until 11 p.m.
  • McClelland Community Centre and Arena (Copper Cliff) – open until 9 p.m.
  • T.M. Davies Community Centre and Arena (Lively) – open until 9 p.m.

Splash Pads

The City’s splash pads are open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Visit www.greatersudbury.ca/splashpads for locations.

Splash pads are unsupervised water play areas, and parents/guardians must supervise their children at all times.

Residents Requiring Additional Assistance

City and community outreach teams will provide support to homeless and vulnerable populations as part of their regular outreach program, including providing water and transportation to services as needed. 

The outdoor drinking water fountain is open at Memorial Park and a water refill station is available outside the Sudbury Community Arena.

Seniors and residents who require assistance should call 311 to discuss their individual situation.
