Be Prepared
It's always good planning to have a 72-hour emergency kit, but a few extra items for a frozen water situation is also important.
- Include bottled water and ready to eat foods in your emergency survival kit.
- If you don’t have tap water, drink bottled water.
- Bring in buckets of water from neighbours or melt buckets of snow to use for flushing the toilet. Melted snow is not safe for drinking or bathing, but can be used for flushing toilets.
- If municipal tap water is stored in a clean, airtight container and in a cool location, it should remain safe indefinitely.
- Each household should have four litres of fresh water, per person, per day for drinking and bathing. An active person needs to drink at least two litres of water each day, plus another two litres for basic hygiene.
