What You Can Do About Inflow and Infiltration
There are a few simple things you can do to ensure your property doesn’t contribute to inflow and infiltration.
- Disconnect your rain gutter downspouts, weeping tiles and sump pumps from municipal drains to prevent stormwater from emptying into the sanitary sewer system.
- This is part of the City's Sewer Use By-Law.
- Keep the area around downspouts free of blockages, and ensure your home’s downspout is flowing properly towards the storm sewer.
- Install a rain barrel under your downspout for a free source of water for outdoor use.
- Repair or replace broken sewer pipes on your private property found between your home and the City’s main line.
