Grass Recycling, otherwise known as grasscycling, means to leave your grass clippings on the lawn. It’s very simple! Here are some perks of grasscycling:
- Grow healthy lawns. Grass clippings decompose quickly, help retain moisture, and release valuable nutrients back into the soil.
- Save money. You won’t need to buy paper bags to place grass clippings at the roadside, nor will you need to buy chemical fertilizers for your lawn. You’ll also reduce watering needs, which can impact your water bill.
- Save time. No need to stop while you mow to empty lawnmower bags into paper bags, rake after mowing, or carry bags of grass clippings to the roadside for collection.
- Help the environment. Lawn clippings act as a natural fertilizer, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers which can harm wildlife and pollute waterways.
Grasscycling tips:
- A good rule of thumb to remember is “high and dry”.
- Mow when grass is dry to avoid clumping.
- Remove only 1/3 of grass length or 1 inch maximum per mowing.
- Mow every five to seven days.
- If the grass is overgrown, mow twice, first at a high blade setting, then lower.
- Sharpen mower blades twice a year.
