Eligibility for Community Housing
Who can apply?
You can apply for community housing if:
- You are at least 16 years old,
- You are able to live independently, with or without support services (which you must arrange),
- All members of the household match one of the following descriptions: Canadian citizen, landed immigrant, refugee, refugee claimant, have applied for refugee claimant status or have made an application for status as a permanent resident,
- No member of the household is currently under a removal order which has become enforceable,
- No member of the household owes money to any community housing provider in the province of Ontario, and
- No member of the household has been convicted of an offence in relation to rent-geared-to-income assistance or found to have misrepresented their income for the purpose of rent-geared-to-income assistance by a Court of Law, the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal or the Landlord and Tenant Board.
I own my own home; can I still apply?
You cannot own a home suitable for year-round occupancy while residing in a rent-geared-to-income unit. You must sell or terminate your lease for any residential property you own or have an interest in within 180 days after being housed.

I do not have an income; am I eligible for community housing?
Yes. Once you are housed you must pursue income from one or more of the following sources:
- Ontario Works,
- Support payments,
- Employment Insurance,
- Any pension or support payments required under a sponsorship agreement, or
- Any federal or provincial pension (OAS, GAINS )
Failure to pursue a specific type of income within the required time frame will result in a decision of ineligibility.
