Greater Sudbury Fire Services Receives Provincial Funding to Strengthen Firefighter Safety

The City of Greater Sudbury continues to prioritize the long-term health and wellness of its first responders thanks to a significant investment from the Government of Ontario. Greater Sudbury Fire Services has received an additional $301,783 through the Provincial Fire Protection Grant to enhance cancer prevention measures for local firefighters.
This funding is part of a broader provincial initiative aimed at modernizing fire protection and improving safety equipment across Ontario. The grant will be used to purchase and install specialized decontamination technology, including new bunker gear washing and drying units and a dedicated cleaning unit for self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
“We are incredibly grateful to the Government of Ontario for this funding,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre. “Our firefighters put their lives on the line to protect our community, and it is our duty to ensure they have the safest working conditions possible. This investment helps us protect the people who protect us.”
Firefighting gear is frequently exposed to toxic chemicals and carcinogens during active calls. Proper decontamination is crucial in reducing occupational cancer risks faced by fire services personnel. The new equipment allows for more effective removal of hazardous particulates from personal protective equipment, ensuring that gear is safe for reuse.
“The health and safety of our team is paramount,” said Rob Grimwood, Chief of Fire Services. “A great deal of work has gone into assessing our needs, and we are allocating these funds in a way that will have the greatest beneficial impact on the health and safety of our firefighters. These advanced cleaning units help us take a significant step forward in our cancer prevention program to ensure our members go home safe after every shift.”
The new equipment is scheduled to be installed and operational in the coming months.
