City of Greater Sudbury Honoured as Age-Friendly Community

Jan 19, 2026

During the 2026 Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) conference yesterday in Toronto, the City of Greater Sudbury was recognized as an Age-Friendly Community by the Ontario Government highlighting the City’s ongoing commitment to better serving and celebrating older adults

The recognition was received during the Ontario Age-Friendly Community Recognition Ceremony, which celebrates the work of municipalities that make spaces and services more accessible for people of all ages and stages of life, and all abilities. It also acknowledges communities that create opportunities for older adults to live active, safe and enjoyable lives while supporting their health and maintaining their connection to their community. The City of Greater Sudbury is among a small group of Ontario municipalities that met these criteria in 2025.

“This recognition reflects the strong commitment Greater Sudbury has made to supporting older adults,” said Mayor Paul Lefebvre. “Through community engagement, accessible programming and the dedication of City staff, partners, and volunteers, we are creating a city where people can age safely, stay active and remain connected to their community.”

In 2025, Greater Sudbury was a hotspot for health and well-being for older adults.  The City hosted the Ontario 55+ Summer Games, held 25 community seminars known as Coffee Chats that gathered input from more than 300 older adults, delivered its annual Healthy Aging Fair attracting over 60 local organization and 250 attendees and continued to strengthen its Older Adults Advisory Panel. In addition, the City continues to operate Pioneer Manor, its long term care home which supports older adults every day.
