Jul 2, 2026

The City of Greater Sudbury is pleased to announce the appointment of John McPhee as Deputy Chief of Paramedic Services.

Following a competitive recruitment process, Mr. McPhee was selected for the role based on his extensive leadership experience in paramedic operations, system performance and strategic service planning. He most recently served in senior command roles with Toronto Paramedic Services, where he led divisional priorities and strategic initiatives for one of the largest and busiest paramedic services in Canada.

In his current role, Mr. McPhee oversees system-wide operational readiness, evidence informed decision-making and large-scale service initiatives. His leadership has shaped major projects, including emergency response redesigns, resource optimization strategies and the development of alternative patient care pathways that reduce pressure on emergency departments and improve patient outcomes.

Mr. McPhee brings a blend of frontline clinical experience and advanced technical expertise. His background includes biomedical and electrical systems engineering, paramedic practice at both the primary and advanced care levels and ongoing studies in health information management. He has led complex analytical and operational initiatives, managed high stakes incidents using IMS protocols and worked closely with municipal leaders, government partners and community stakeholders.

A bilingual northern Ontario native, Mr. McPhee offers a deep understanding of the region’s geography, communities and cultural landscape. His commitment to inclusive, accessible service delivery will support the continued evolution of Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services.

“Deputy Chief McPhee brings a strong combination of operational leadership, technical expertise and Northern Ontario perspective,” said Aaron Archibald, Chief of Paramedic Services. “His experience managing high-volume systems, leading evidence-informed initiatives and working collaboratively across government and community partners will be a tremendous asset to our service and to the residents we serve.”

“I am honoured to join Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services and return home to serve this great community,” said McPhee. “I look forward to working with dedicated paramedics to continue strengthening our service and supporting the health and safety of residents across the city.”

Deputy Chief McPhee begins his new role August 17, 2026.
