More than 1,000 individuals - participants, along with their friends and family - visited Greater Sudbury last week for the Sudbury 2025 Ontario 55+ Summer Games, hosted by the City of Greater Sudbury with support from the Ontario Ministry of Sport. These visitors, along with the publicity generated by the Games, contributed an estimated $1.2 million in economic benefit to the community.
This impact was felt across several sectors, including accommodations, tourism attractions, culinary and cultural experiences, retail and hospitality. Visitors spent two or three nights in Greater Sudbury, and many took advantage of their downtime between events to explore all our city has to offer.
“We welcomed people from all across Ontario, many of whom were visiting Sudbury for the first time or returning after many years,” said Lara Fielding, Manager of Tourism and Culture for the City of Greater Sudbury. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re confident that this experience will encourage longer stays, future visits and continued economic growth.”
The Sudbury 2025 Ontario 55+ Summer Games highlighted Greater Sudbury’s ability to host large-scale events and showcased the welcoming spirit of the community. From the Opening Ceremonies at Grace Hartman Amphitheatre on the shores of Ramsey Lake to the mid-week celebration, Middle Night, at Science North, visitors experienced the vibrancy and diversity that make the city unique.
Participants and supporters praised the Games as a standout among similar events, commending the organization, the dedication of volunteers and staff, and the warm hospitality they received throughout their stay. These positive impressions are expected to inspire return visits and generate increased tourism activity in the months and years ahead.
The success of the Games demonstrates the significant value of hosting events of this scale. While the immediate economic impact is clear, the long-term benefits will continue to grow as visitors return to discover more of what Greater Sudbury has to offer. The City remains committed to supporting tourism and cultural initiatives that drive economic development and showcase our community to the province and beyond.
