Residents Get First Look at Updated Downtown Master Plan

Dec 10, 2025

Today, the City of Greater Sudbury is showcasing the proposed updates for the City’s Downtown Master Plan (DMP) during two in-person sessions at Place des Arts (the first from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the second from 5 to 7 p.m.). City staff have been working to make updates to the DMP based on resident feedback from previous events and were pleased to share the results with the community.

Among other changes, the updated DMP introduces a new vision statement for our city’s downtown: “Downtown Sudbury is the vibrant heartbeat of northern Ontario with a welcoming spirit, bustling economy and interconnected urban environment”. This statement informs the direction of future developments and better reflects the priorities of residents and businesses. The updates also include the addition of a fourth strategic objective, “Livability and Well-being”.

This iteration of the DMP has bolstered support for the Cultural Hub and Event Centre, both slated to begin construction very soon. These builds are part of the City’s Transformation Project, which will play a pivotal role in shaping downtown Sudbury over the next few years.

“These updates to the Downtown Master Plan come at very important time for of our community, especially given the recent investments that will breathe new life into the city’s identity” said Ed Landry, Senior Planner for the City of Greater Sudbury. “We are very excited to share what we’ve been working on with residents as we prepare to finalize this version of the Plan in the new year.”

In early 2026, the City’s Planning Services will present this updated DMP to City Council. Residents can read the updated Plan and related files online on Over To You in the meantime. Once endorsed by Council, the updated DMP will be the blueprint for a more vibrant, inclusive and inviting downtown Sudbury and a thriving local economy.

Background on the Downtown Master Plan

The Downtown Master Plan is a comprehensive plan initiated in 2010 and originally endorsed by City Council in April 2012. It guides the long-term revitalization of Downtown Sudbury, aiming to reinforce the Downtown’s role as the biggest, brightest and best downtown in northern Ontario. The City is updating the Master Plan as many of 10-year projects have been successfully completed.
