Residents Encouraged to Avoid Delays by Obtaining Building Permits Before the Busy Season

Mar 6, 2025

As outdoor construction season approaches, residents are reminded of the importance of obtaining the necessary building permits for their projects, including building decks, sheds, detached garages, gazebos, installing pools and more.

Comprehensive, user-friendly checklists for the most common permit types are available online at greatersudbury.ca/buildingpermits. Simply select the type of project and be directed to a package containing all the necessary materials to prepare an application.

From April to September, the City’s Building Services division processes approximately 2,000 building permits. While we strive to process permits promptly, delays can occur due to incomplete submissions or high application volumes. Early submission of a permit application ensures you can avoid delays.

Obtaining a building permit is critical for ensuring the life safety, integrity and value of your property.

To make the building permit process easier, Building Services has introduced:

  • An updated website: Checklists and hand-sketched plot plans tailored to help you with your specific project are available online.
  • Online permitting system: Submit your application, view updates and schedule inspections from the comfort of your home using Pronto.
  • Permit Palooza: Staff will be available at Tom Davies Square on March 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to issue same-day permits or expedite your building permit application.
  • Builders’ bulletins: Regular Building Code updates and other important permit information will be posted online for easy access and up-to-date information regarding building changes.
  • Social media reminders and tips: Look for our posts on Facebook, X, Instagram and LInkedIN for helpful reminders and tips
