Notification of Controlled Burn at Anderson Farm Museum

Jul 17, 2025

Beginning this week, the City of Greater Sudbury will conduct daily controlled burns between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Anderson Farm Museum property in Lively. The burn is expected to continue for 10 to 15 days and has been permitted by Greater Sudbury Fire Services.

The burn is in response to a wood-boring beetle infestation at Anderson Farm Museum.

The incineration will be controlled using small burn barrels, placed in a location designated by Fire Services, and continuously monitored by staff with fire extinguishers and a charged hose. The fire will be fully extinguished by soaking the barrel at the end of each day.

While public access to the Anderson Farm Museum site will be partially restricted during this time, summer programming will continue as scheduled.

Background on the Infestation

During recent capital work, staff discovered signs of a significant wood-boring beetle infestation in the historic Barn at Anderson Farm Museum. The effected buildings were immediately closed to the public and staff, and the City engaged Wood Research and Development (WRD) to conduct an assessment. The controlled burn of the infested material is essential to addressing this infestation.
