New Mattress Recycling Program in Greater Sudbury
Apr 1, 2025
Effective April 1, 2025, discarded mattresses in Greater Sudbury will be recycled instead of filling up the landfill. This new initiative will divert mattresses, box springs and futon mattresses collected at the roadside and dropped off at all three landfill sites and the Walden Small Vehicle Transfer Station for recycling.
This initiative is part of the City’s long-term goal to divert 90 per cent of solid waste from landfills by 2050. By taking part in the mattress diversion program, residents are helping extend the life of waste management infrastructure and making Greater Sudbury more sustainable.
Why the change? Mattresses are large and bulky and take up too much space in the City’s landfills. They are hard to compact, resulting in reduced landfill lifespan. Metal springs in these items can also damage landfill equipment, leading to costly repairs and downtime.
How will this affect you? There will be no change to how residents place these items at the roadside. Eligible households can continue to make a request for roadside collection on the WasteWise App, online or by calling 311. Mattresses, box springs and futon mattresses will be collected by a separate collection vehicle and set aside at the landfill(s) for diversion. Residents dropping off these items at the landfill will be directed to the mattress diversion area.
By recycling mattresses instead of sending them to the landfill, the City can:
• Extend the life of landfill sites, delaying the need for expensive expansions.
• Reduce operational costs linked to equipment maintenance and landfill management.
• Lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve environmental sustainability.
• Keep 95 per cent of mattress materials, including metal, foam, wood and fabric, out of landfills and repurpose them into new products.
