GSDC Supports Curl Sudbury's Winning Bid to Host National Curling Championships

Dec 9, 2025

This morning, the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation (GSDC) presented Curl Sudbury with a cheque in recognition of their successful bid to host Curling Canada’s 2026 U21 Mixed Doubles and U20 Curling Championships here in Greater Sudbury – events that are expected to draw athletes, fans and attention from across Canada.  The cheque presentation was held at the home of Curl Sudbury, the Northern Credit Union Community Centre, in Minnow Lake.

Anna Frattini, Vice Chair of the GSDC, presented a cheque for $133,000 to Curl Sudbury on behalf of the GSDC.

“We are so pleased to be able to support Curl Sudbury in hosting these championships for Curling Canada,” said Frattini.  “This event will bring a welcome boost to local businesses and help promote our community, and we look forward to seeing that positive impact.”

Curling Canada’s U21 Mixed Doubles and U20 Championships will take place in early 2026 and are expected to attract dozens of teams and their fans, generating economic benefits for local businesses and showcasing the city’s vibrant curling community and hospitality. The two events are expected to have an economic impact of more than $600,000.

“The City of Greater Sudbury is an ideal location to host national championships like these ones,” said Lara Fielding, Manager of Tourism and Culture for the City of Greater Sudbury. “We are home to beautiful landscapes, welcoming people and top-tier athletics facilities, and these championships help us showcase Greater Sudbury as a premier destination for sport tourism.”

“Greater Sudbury is firmly on the curling map, and with two national championships coming here in 2026, we’re building on incredible momentum while delivering real economic benefits to our community by filling our hotels, restaurants, and local businesses," said Mayor of Greater Sudbury, Paul Lefebvre. "We’re proud to support Curl Sudbury as they showcase our city as a welcoming and capable host for major sporting events."

Funding for this event comes from the GSDC’s Tourism Development Fund and is a contribution from the GSDC’s share of the Municipal Accommodation Tax, which reinvests dollars spent by visitors back into Greater Sudbury’s tourism sector.
