Greater Sudbury Public Library Launches New Digital Collection to Celebrate Ontario Heritage Week
Feb 21, 2025
On Friday, February 21, 2025, the Greater Sudbury Public Library launched its newest digital collection in their Heritage Database in celebration of Ontario Heritage Week. This collection features the Sudbury Star, from its inception in 1910 to 1925, now available online. The collection joins other valuable digital resources such as the Northern Life, Le Voyageur and Vernon’s City Directory collections.
“The Library is proud to make this invaluable collection of historical newspapers available to the public for the first time”, said CEO and Chief Librarian, Brian Harding. “The time period represented—which is not covered by any of our other resources—offers a rare glimpse into Greater Sudbury’s past, its stories, challenges, and triumphs. By offering free, worldwide access, we are ensuring that this rich history is preserved and shared with future generations.”
The digitization project was made possible through the generous funding of the Sudbury District Archives Interest Group, in partnership with the City of Greater Sudbury Archives. As the oldest publication in Sudbury still in existence, the release of the first 15 years of the Sudbury Star offers a unique glimpse into the city's early history.
Genealogists, researchers, students, and historians can now explore Sudbury’s past like never before – online and searchable. The Heritage Database provides a glimpse into the events, individuals, local organizations, business and industries that have shaped Greater Sudbury and its people.
