GOVA Transit Gets Farebox Upgrade

Jan 21, 2025

Riders on GOVA Transit’s conventional buses will notice new fareboxes onboard by the end of January.

Phase 1 of the City Council-approved Transit Farebox Upgrade project involves replacing existing fareboxes with new ones featuring smart card technology. During the first phase of the project, current payment processes for GOVA Transit passengers will remain the same.

Phase 2 of the project, anticipated to launch in the fall of 2025, will introduce a mobile app and smart card to riders, replacing the current paper ride cards. This technology will offer passengers simplified, accessible payment options, reducing wait times during boarding and enhancing the overall rider experience.

The Transit Farebox Upgrade project aligns with Council’s Community and Energy Emissions Plan to increase transit mode share to 25 per cent by 2050 and aligns with the City of Greater Sudbury Strategic plan, which aims to enhance asset management and service excellence by expanding ridership through innovative and responsive system improvements.
