Final BuildingIN Public Consultation Session Will Refine Neighbourhood Solutions

Feb 13, 2025

The City of Greater Sudbury invites residents to attend a virtual consultation session on February 20, 2025 at 7 p.m. with BuildingIN, a collaborative initiative aimed at addressing the housing supply challenge.

The theme of the third, and final, public session is Refining and it will build on feedback gathered during the first two sessions. You do not need to have attended the first sessions to participate on February 20.

BuildingIN has partnered with the City for a six-month program that will result in the development of a tailored strategy for qualified Greater Sudbury neighbourhoods. The program is designed to align with the City’s Housing Supply Strategy by providing recommendations for multi-unit low-rise infill housing — the development of residential buildings with multiple housing units, such as townhouses, duplexes, triplexes or small apartment buildings. This approach transforms underused or vacant land into housing options.

The third community consultation session will be held virtually via Zoom and feature group discussions, problem-solving and active listening, and will cover the following topics:

  • Refining the solution for neighbourhoods.
  • Considering transitional features.
  • Recommending priorities and early investments.

Based on the feedback received during the public sessions and meetings with interest holders, BuildingIN will present recommendations to Council on how infill would best be implemented in Greater Sudbury.

About BuildingIN

The BuildingIN initiative is a collaboration of housing professionals from non-profit organizations and private companies that helps municipalities review and establish a viable business model for multi-unit infill housing, supporting the City’s housing goals. Rather than focusing on expansion (building outward) or high-density construction (building upward), the program enables municipalities to effectively "build in." This ensures that housing growth integrates seamlessly into existing neighbourhoods. As semifinalists and runners-up in the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Supply Challenge, BuildingIN has been able to scale up in a short period of time and is now working with multiple municipalities across Canada.
