City of Greater Sudbury Donates Boat 22 to Wahnapitae First Nation

Dec 19, 2025

Yesterday, Boat 22 was officially delivered to its new home at Wahnapitae First Nation. The vessel, a 2005 Connor Industries Stanley Hull, previously served as a rescue boat on Lake Wanapitei for many years before being decommissioned in 2020 when it was determined to no longer be suitable for water-rescue operations.

With no further municipal use planned for the boat, the City chose to donate Boat 22 to Wahnapitae First Nation. The First Nation intends to use the vessel to safely explore and access Rough Lake located within its traditional territory, while supporting coordinated efforts with partners and neighbours on the lake. The boat will also enhance safety and support broader community initiatives in the region.

“This donation will make a significant difference for our community,” said Chief Larry Roque of Wahnapitae First Nation. “We appreciate the City’s support and look forward to using this vessel to advance our community outreach and safety initiatives.”

“The City has a long track record of repurposing decommissioned equipment, when possible, for training and other service uses,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre. “We’re pleased to donate this vessel to Wahnapitae First Nation, where it will be put to use supporting their outreach and safety work on the water.”
