City Council Wrap-Up: June 24, 2025
Jun 25, 2025
Here is an overview of some key discussions and decisions from the City Council meeting on June 24.
Housing and Homelessness Plan Annual Update
Council approved the 2024 update of the City’s Housing and Homelessness Plan, which outlines ongoing efforts to improve access to affordable housing and reduce homelessness through a coordinated, community-based approach. Each year, an update of the plan must be reviewed by Council and submitted to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
City staff and community partners have been working together over several years to align local housing and homelessness programs, which included establishing the Homelessness Network to coordinate delivery of various services. The annual update highlighted progress made through strategies like the Roadmap to End Homelessness and the Social Housing Revitalization Plan, and included a comprehensive list of progress and next steps under each of the plan’s seven priority areas.

Complete Streets Design Guidelines
Council approved the Complete Street Design Guidelines, which aim to make Greater Sudbury streets safer, more accessible and more environmentally friendly. The guidelines, developed to support the City’s Complete Streets Policy, provide a consistent approach for integrating key elements into road projects and new roads.
The guidelines provide a flexible plan to design streets that fit the needs of each neighbourhood, from quiet rural roads to busy downtown areas. They include changes like narrower traffic lanes to slow down cars, wider sidewalks for strollers and mobility devices, and more space for bike lanes and greenery. Public input played an important role in shaping these guidelines, with strong support for safer bike lanes, better sidewalks and improved transit access.
Staff will now review and update relevant policies to align with the Complete Street principles, using data like traffic patterns and safety records to guide decisions. The guidelines will be applied to all new road projects and reconstructions wherever feasible.
Other Items
Council meetings often include reports as “Correspondence for Information Only”. At this meeting, those reports included a positive status update on volunteer firefighter recruitment and retention, and on the City’s progress in meeting provincially mandated certification requirements for all firefighters.
