Blue Box Recycling Program – Important Changes Coming January 1, 2026

What’s Happening?
Starting January 1, 2026, the management of the residential Blue Box recycling program will transfer from the City of Greater Sudbury to producers of Blue Box materials. This change is required under new provincial legislation.

Informational Magnets Coming to Your Blue Box

To help you prepare, the City will deliver informational magnets with updated recycling contact details.

• When: Between December 9 and 26
• How: Magnets will be placed inside your Blue Box after collection.
• Tip: Leave a Blue Box out on your scheduled collection day to receive your magnet.

If you don’t receive a magnet, visit greatersudbury.ca/blueboxchanges for the new contact information.

What’s Changing?

• Program Responsibility: Producers of Blue Box materials will now handle all operational and financial responsibility.

  • The program will continue with changes and separate collection (participants will receive details by mail).

What’s Staying the Same?

• WM will continue residential Blue Box collection for households and apartments currently serviced by the City.
• Roadside residential Blue Box collection will continue to be provided weekly.
• Blue Box collection schedules remain available on the Waste Wise app.
• Blue Box placement rules remain unchanged – place containers out by 7:00 a.m. on collection day.
• You can keep using your existing approved Blue Box and Big Blue containers.
• Blue Box materials delivered to the Recycling Center on Frobisher Street will continue to be accepted at no charge for both residential and non-residential users
